1F.C. SANTA ROSA SECRETARY’S REPORT 2004

Guests of honour, other specially invited guests, coaches, managers, parents, well-wishers and above all players of 1 FC SANTA ROSA – this is an overview of our activities over the last year. It has been a very eventful and exciting one, the highlights being our tour to Suriname in August and the launch of our website.

Term 1

Term 1 began a bit differently this year as we held our 2003 Awards function on the 10 January because of the unavailability of this venue in December of 2003. We have been fortunate therefore to have two Awards functions in this year. We thank all those who assisted with the function in January of this year and we take this opportunity to thank also those parents and well-wishers who have worked to make today a success.

Term 1 saw a large influx of new members particularly in the U-10 age group. This term, our coaches concentrated on technique training and knowledge of the game in preparation for competitions which were to take place beginning in the Easter vacation. At the end of the term, on Saturday 3 April, we held our Annual Fathers vs. Sons match which was enjoyed by all. The game was won by the sons but the fathers put up an excellent fight. We look forward to this event again in April of 2005 when the fathers can avenge themselves.

Femi’s Bi-Annual Football Extravaganza.

Teams selected from our U-11 and U-14 age groups participated in this tournament which was held at the National Hockey Centre in Tacarigua on Easter Sunday. As usual our teams performed creditably with the U-11’s ending the tournament with third place medals.

Youth Academic Development Programme

On Tuesday 6 April, a lecture was held for the U-18 and U-15 age groups, along with their parents, at the Look Loy residence. Mrs. Ann

Brathwaite conducted a very informative session on the SAT examinations and general information regarding studying abroad and how to successfully secure scholarships from foreign universities. Although the lecture was very well-received by those who attended, too many of our members did not respond to the invitation and this was very unfortunate. Those who did not attend certainly missed out on a valuable session. We hope to repeat this session in 2005 and we certainly hope that parents ensure that their boys respond positively when dates are announced.

TERM 2

Our sessions this term began with registration of new members and regular coaching sessions. This term in particular was a very eventful one.

Community Outreach Programme

Our Social Development Officer, Pearl White, initiated a project to assist the Senior Citizens Home in Arima. The U-18 age group began providing monthly hampers of toiletry items to the home and this has continued, although a bit irregularly, throughout the year. We urge the members of this age group to renew their commitment in 2005 by being consistent and generous with their donations.

As usual, this year we have asked all parents to donate items for our annual Christmas hamper. This year our hamper goes to the Word of Life Community of Arima. We thank all parents who generously donated to this worthy cause.

Social Development Programme

Ms. Joanne Edwards, a professional Image Consultant visited with us and lectured to our U-18 players in June. The focus of this lecture was preparation for the world of work, job interviews and proper grooming. Once again, the lecture was well-received and of invaluable assistance.

Launch of Website

During this term, our Club unofficially launched its own website at www.1stfcsantarosa.com. This provides us with another means of reaching our members, supporters and football lovers in general. The website includes news about our football school, our representative teams, development programmes and an interactive game. On-line registration is also possible. We are indeed proud of this achievement and today we will do the official launch later on in the programme along with a tour of the website.

First Annual Barbecue

On the last day of Term 2, we held our first fund-raising barbecue in aid of our Suriname Touring team. It was very successful thanks to the help of all the parents of the Club who assisted by purchasing tickets, providing donations, preparing dishes and helping on the day. We take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude to parents and well-wishers who supported us in this venture. We thank especially Mr. Raul Hercules who although not connected to the Club contributed his time and energy by preparing the rice free of charge. We thank also the authorities of the Youth Training Centre at Golden Grove for providing us with storage facilities and the young men at the Centre for assisting us with the seasoning of the chickens. As was promised, the entire proceeds of this venture went towards the tour to Suriname.

July/August Vacation.

Republic Cup Competition

A team selected from our U-13 age group participated in the Annual Republic Cup competition. This team performed really well. In the preliminary round they drew two of their games and won two. This enabled them to qualify for the National Finals held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Suriname Tour

Eighteen (18) members from our U-18 age group, along with coaches Kenny Thomas, Timothy Rochford, Manager Phillip Lander and the Club’s President and Secretary journeyed to Suriname in August to participate in a tournament organized by the Surinamese Football Federation. Our team played excellent football in this four-team tournament. They won their first match against the Suriname sub-champion, SV Transvaal 3:1 , lost to the champion Vasco 1:2 and also lost to the French Guyana National Under 19 team 1:3; this team went on to win the tournament. Despite these losses the tour provided another tremendous cultural experience for our boys as in addition to the football matches, they were able to visit several places of interest. Of particular interest to them was the afternoon spent at the Clarence Seedorf Center.

I wish on behalf of our Club to thank sincerely all those companies and individuals who provided sponsorship and financial assistance to members of the touring team.

TERM 3

Femi’s Football Extravaganza

Our U-14 team only last week emerged winners of their age group in the second of two tournaments organized by Femi’s Soccer School this year. They are also due to participate in a round-robin tournament this afternoon.

COACHES COURSES

One of our major aims as a football club is to deliver professional instruction of the highest quality to our members. In keeping with this aim, several of our coaches have expanded their expertise by participating in courses during the year.

In March, Coach Justin De Freitas successfully completed the FA International Licence Course. In April Coach David Benjamin completed the Concacaf C Licence Course. In September, Coaches David Benjamin and Ferdinand Bibby successfully completed the FIFA Futsal Coaching Course. This course was also done in 2003 by coaches Timothy Rochford and Anderson Veronique.

COACHES INTERNATIONAL VISIT

A significant achievement this year of which we are very proud is an international visit to Los Angeles made by two of our coaches. Our Club’s President was able to arrange a two-week attachment for coaches Timothy Rochford and Anderson Veronique with the Los Angeles Galaxy , one of the teams of the United States professional league- Major League Soccer. They visited from March 7-21, spending an unforgettable two weeks. From the detailed reports which they submitted on their return, the experience they gained
was invaluable.

LOSING REMARKS

In closing, I would like to thank all those who have supported us financially and otherwise, on and off the field, during this year. I specially thank Mrs. Cheryl Wilkinson, Principal of the Arima Senior Comprehensive School for continuing to allow us the use of the school’s facilities. Our gratitude goes out to parents and guardians who have continued to support us by entrusting their sons to our care and to all our coaches who discharge their duties with enthusiasm, efficiency and professionalism.

On behalf of the President, Coaches, Team Managers, Social Development Officer and other 1.FC Santa Rosa Officials, I thank you all and take the opportunity to extend heartiest compliments of the season to you and very best wishes for a healthy and fulfilling 2005.
